While inflation eased slightly in January, Tuesday’s Consumer Price Index print still came in higher than expected. The pace of higher prices cooling may be starting to plateau, analysts fear. 



The <a rel="noreferrer noopener" href="https://www.bls.gov/news.release/cpi.nr0.htm">CPI</a> rose 0.5% in January, coming in 6.4% higher than a year ago. Economists had expected a 6.2% year-over-year increase. 



Shelter costs accounted for about half of the month-over-month increase. Food and energy prices came in 10.1% higher and 8.7% higher year over year. 



However, even a slight decline in the historically high inflation Americans have experienced for roughly 18 months is a cautiously positive sign, Noelle Acheson, editor of Crypto is Macro Now and former head of market insights at Genesis, said in a <a rel="noreferrer noopener" href="https://noelleacheson.substack.com/?utm_source=substack&amp;utm_medium=web&amp;utm_campaign=substack_profile">note</a> Tuesday. 



“We should see greater confidence in the soft landing narrative, renewed conviction that there could be rate cuts this year, and the return of more risk-on sentiment,” Acheson wrote. “Even this would be a temporary narrative, however.”



Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell has maintained that future rate decisions are going to be data-dependent, but he expressed confidence in sustained cooling prices in <a rel="noreferrer noopener" href="https://blockworks.co/news/fed-chair-comments-spawn-volatility">comments</a> earlier this month. 



“The disinflationary process, the process of getting inflation down, has begun,” Powell said during an appearance at the Economic Club in Washington, D.C. last week. 



The central bank is watching for a cooling labor market and slower-paced inflation, Powell reiterated in Washington, D.C. 



“The reality is we’re going to react to the data,” Powell said. “So if we continue to get, for example, strong labor market reports or higher inflation reports, it may well be the case that we have to do more and raise rates more than is priced in.”



Markets were mixed after the release of Tuesday’s print, which hit before the start of the trading session. Dow Jones futures were relatively flat while the Nasdaq Composite index initially spiked up before turning sharply lower, down about -0.5% at the opening bell in New York. 



Crypto markets edged lower to match, with bitcoin (<a rel="noreferrer noopener" href="https://blockworks.co/price/btc">BTC</a>) losing around -0.7% and ether (<a rel="noreferrer noopener" href="https://blockworks.co/price/eth">ETH</a>) off a fraction. 



<a href="https://blockworks.co/news/cooling-inflation-has-bitcoin-stocks-heating-up">December’s CPI reading</a> showed a 7.1% year-over-year increase, coming in cooler than analysts had expected. 



The New York Fed’s recession model is now calling for a 57% probability of a recession, even higher than the central bank branch predicted ahead of the 2008 recession. The model is based on the difference between 3-month and 10-year Treasury yields, and the model’s track record is perfect once it goes above 50% probability.

Inflation Cooled in January, but Analysts Fear a Plateau

 A combination of RSI, Bollinger Bands and MACD indicators can help investors confirm winning trades.
 
Cryptocurrency trading has evolved from the perception of simply being a game of chance to a strategic process. Successful traders rely on a combination of technical analysis, specific indicators and metrics to find trades with a high probability of profit.
Before explaining the three technical analysis strategies that can help confirm a winning trade, let’s first define the key terms:
<ul><li>Technical analysis — is all about analyzing statistical trends, so as long as an asset has historical data, technical analysis can be applied. Technical analysis involves looking at the past trading activity and price variations of a crypto asset, with the goal of understanding how the supply and demand of a specific asset might influence its future price changes. By using charts to evaluate price trends and patterns, it’s often been possible to find profitable trading opportunities.</li></ul>
<ul><li>Indicator — is a tool that helps traders make decisions in the market. Select indicators on cryptocurrency market charts are used to measure different aspects of market activity. Ultimately, traders use them to try and predict potential future price movements.</li></ul>
The three indicators for crypto trading examined here are: 
<ul>
<li>Relative strength index </li>
<li>Bollinger Bands</li>
<li>Moving average convergence/divergence</li>
</ul>
The key distinction lies in the strategy used to apply what these indicators point to in the market. Below are some best practices on how to use them.
<h2>Relative Strength Index</h2>
The relative strength index (RSI) measures momentum — whether an asset is overbought or oversold. It does that by comparing the closing price with the asset’s 50-day moving average. 
If the current price of an asset is within 10% of its 50-day moving average and has been trending upward for at least two days, the RSI reading is considered to be above 70, which qualifies as overbought; on the other hand, an RSI reading under 30 is thought to be oversold.
A strong upward RSI momentum tends to point to an impending rally. 
Look specifically for this type of RSI divergence: two lows, where the first low is higher than the next low, followed by an RSI where a lower low is followed by a higher low. Such a divergence signifies a potential change in momentum, meaning that a sizable upside could be happening soon.
<h2>Bollinger Bands</h2>
Bollinger Bands can be used to determine an asset's relative high and low price over a set period by using a common statistics metric known as standard deviation. 
By plotting bands two deviations above and two deviations below a moving average, typically 20 days, traders can use historical data to compare it to the current price.
Try using Bollinger Bands to identify breakout price action when an asset’s price moves outside of the upper or lower bands. Prices near the extremes of these bands can be another good confirmation of a winning trade.
<h2>Moving Average Convergence/Divergence</h2>
The moving average convergence/divergence (MACD) is a trend-following momentum indicator. The MACD line shows the relationship between two exponential moving averages (EMAs) — the difference between the 12-day EMA and the 26-day EMA.
Finally and most importantly, there is the signal line — a 9-day EMA of the MACD line. With the MACD, traders watch the MACD line and the signal line to see if and when they cross over.
When the MACD line crosses above the signal line, it is a bullish indicator that informs traders to consider buying the asset, as this signals a green candle could be coming. 
Conversely, when the MACD line crosses below the signal line, it is a bearish indicator that informs traders to consider selling or shorting the asset. Historically, this leads to a drop in asset value.
<h2>Using indicators to confirm winning VORTECS™ Score alerts</h2>

 Ark Invest has spent nearly $30 million on the Coinbase stock so far in 2023 while dumping Grayscale Bitcoin Trust shares.
 
Cathie Wood’s investment management firm Ark Invest continues stacking Coinbase (COIN) stock amid the <a href="https://cointelegraph.com/news/bitcoin-price-hits-2-week-low-amid-warning-22-5k-loss-means-fresh-dip">latest cryptocurrency market decline</a>.
On Feb. 10 and Feb. 13, Ark made its first COIN purchases since mid-January, adding significant exposure to the United States’ largest crypto exchange.
Last Friday, Ark bought 139,105 COIN shares for the ARK Innovation exchange-traded fund (ARKK), according to an investor notification seen by Cointelegraph. On the same day, the asset manager also purchased 23,220 COIN shares for allocation by another fund, ARK Next Generation Internet ETF (ARKW). The asset manager spent a total of $9.2 million on these Coinbase stock investments.

With COIN closing at $56.4 on Monday, the purchases cost Ark about $6.7 million.
Just in two days, Ark spent nearly $16 million on the Coinbase stock, or $3.5 million more than it totally stacked in COIN shares in January. As of Feb. 14, Ark's monthly COIN purchases amount to 280,000 shares, while in January Ark bought more than 330,000 COIN shares.
Ark’s entire COIN purchases so far in 2023 amount to 614,657 shares, bought for $28.8 million.

The latest purchases come amid Ark Invest CEO and chief investment officer Wood continuing to express a bullish outlook on the cryptocurrency market.
On Feb. 3, Wood again <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=s2W8P-kMbUM&amp;ab_channel=AltcoinDaily" target="_blank" rel="noopener nofollow">reiterated</a> her bullish Bitcoin (<a href="https://cointelegraph.com/bitcoin-price">BTC</a>) stance, predicting that Bitcoin will hit $1 million by 2030. The investment expert believes Bitcoin should be adopted by countries troubled with inflation as an insurance policy due to its resilient network.
The Ark’s chief executive also believes crypto assets <a href="https://cointelegraph.com/news/ark-invest-ceo-eyes-crypto-turnaround-amid-whiffs-of-a-fed-pivot">will see a huge turnaround in 2023</a> due to inflation and a potential Fed pivot.

Cathie Wood’s Ark Invest bags nearly $16M Coinbase stocks in February

NFT marketplace Magic Eden said Monday it would axe roughly 15% of its staff as part of its company-wide restructuring efforts this year.



Out of 144 employees, 22 will be let go, CEO and co-founder Jack Lu said in a statement via a company <a href="https://contenthub.magiceden.io/a-message-from-magic-eden-ceo-and-cofounder-jack-lu">blog post</a>.



Lu also said in order for the company to meet its goals this year, its team should comprise certain types of new skills and expertise without “losing momentum.”



“[The employees] have supported us through challenges and dedicated their time and efforts to help Magic Eden get from 0 to 1,” Lu said. “This decision takes nothing away from their talent, commitment and hard work.”



Those heading for the exit are to receive two months’ worth of severance pay, removal of Magic Eden’s one-year vesting period and an extended one-year exercise period.



Six months of additional healthcare coverage, a one-year subscription to mental health non-profit Headspace, as well as free career coaching and job placement services, are also to be provided to those affected.



It comes as NFT sales activity slumped at the <a href="https://blockworks.co/news/november-nft-sales-volume-drops">end of last year</a> following a general decline in digital asset interest. Though volumes have <a href="https://blockworks.co/news/nft-sales-bounce-back">begun to recover</a>, NFT collectors continue to comprise a fraction of the overall market.



In a bid to meet newly developed challenges, including costly overheads, Magic Eden is having to take a “hard look” at what structure and roles are needed, the post reads.



“The company remains strongly capitalized with a long runway even in today’s bear market,” Lu said. “Many of our products are entering new stages of growth and we will make it our utmost priority to support these products with the strongest teams.”



Some of the industry’s crypto firms began to unwind their ambitious growth plans last year, which first kicked off during the run-up in investor demand toward the end of 2020. That has also translated into further layoffs this year.



In January, the industry shed a further <a href="https://blockworks.co/news/crypto-hiring-2023-turnaround">2,806 jobs</a> — up 330% from December — which included <a href="https://blockworks.co/news/coinbase-lays-off-950-staff-cuts-operational-costs-by-25">Coinbase’s decision</a> to axe 950 staff and reduce operational costs by 25%.



Magic Eden got its start on Solana, but subsequently <a href="https://blockworks.co/news/solana-marketplace-magic-eden-to-offer-ethereum-nfts">branched out to Ethereum</a> and Polygon as part of a long-term multichain strategy.

<h2>Access Protocol</h2>
Access Protocol is a new platform that aims to integrate content into an on-chain environment and build communities. CryptoSlate, in collaboration with Access Protocol, is set to launch a new product soon. Access Protocol provides a new solution to the classic problem of low audience penetration rates among media companies.

Even the top media companies have only half a percent or 0.3% audience penetration rates, and the existing subscription model is not working. Access Protocol solves this problem through the ACS staking model, where the creators create a staking pool, and users acquire ACS tokens and stake them in the creators’ pool. Once they’ve staked, they receive access to some premium content. This model changes the relationship between the consumer and the creator from value extractive to owning a part of the access ecosystem and subscribing through that.

Creators make money indirectly through revenue from inflation, and part of it goes to them. Publishers can also view this as a recurring revenue side. The ACS token demand is tied to the subscription demand from the partners on board and the users they’re able to onboard.
The rewards going to publications such as CryptoSlate, the Block, CoinGecko, Crypto Briefing, etc., are not expected to create downside potential as the reward rate is equivalent to the bitcoin block rewards have been, which is completely fine. Moreover, publications can layer lots of strategies on top, such as special entertainment or events for special users. The concept of ownership is powerful in web3, and owning a part of the access ecosystem can be very enticing for consumers.
The hypothesis is that ownership will make the consumer subscription more attractive than the existing subscription model. The success of Access Protocol’s program with Coin Gecko, where users can convert their candies to locked ACS subscriptions for a year, is a good data point that the new model can work.
The vision for Access is to become a fully community-run protocol and a monetization layer for various platforms. It plans to launch in Q1 2023, and updates can be found on its website and social media channels.

Watchdog and West Yorkshire police raid crypto ATM operators in UK first

While global elites tout financial surveillance through CBDCs, Bitcoiners are demonstrating the human goodwill made possible through self sovereignty.

In the middle of January, global leaders <a href="https://www.entrepreneur.com/business-news/davos-2022-jet-emissions-equaled-co2-output-of-350000-cars/442943">flocked</a> in their private jets to a luxury ski resort in the Swiss town of Davos for the annual conference of the World Economic Forum (WEF).
Under the theme “<a href="https://www.weforum.org/press/2023/01/cooperation-in-a-fragmented-world-addressing-pressing-crises-tackling-future-challenges/">Cooperation In A Fragmented World</a>,” 52 heads of state and many corporate CEOs, along with celebrities and prominent social activists, talked about how to manage the risks that we will be facing in the next decade. Issues such as costs of living and climate change, along with the war in Ukraine, were placed at or near the top of the agenda.

U.S. Climate Envoy John Kerry <a href="https://www.msn.com/en-us/news/world/john-kerry-applauds-fellow-davos-attendees-as-extraterrestrial-for-wanting-to-save-the-planet/ar-AA16rzW2">praised</a> his fellow participants, saying “It's pretty extraordinary that we — a select group of human beings … are able to sit in a room and come together and actually talk about saving the planet.”
At the opening ceremony of the five-day planning meeting, Klaus Schwab, executive chairman of WEF, <a href="https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=vqjm35iZ9OA">remarked</a>, “Through collective responsibility, innovation, human good will and ingenuity, we have a capacity to turn challenges into opportunities.”
<h2>CBDCs And Programmable Money</h2>
One of the key WEF initiatives aims to strengthen global cooperation by <a href="https://www.weforum.org/agenda/2023/01/the-global-collaboration-village-davos-2023/">creating</a> a collaborative village on Metaverse, with the help of Microsoft. By engaging all stakeholders of society, their plan is to create a new digitized economy.
Central bank digital currencies (CBDCs) play a critical role in their projected infrastructure. These digital forms of fiat money, overseen by a country’s central bank, give issuers total control, as they can monitor and restrict transactions. Combined with a worldwide adoption of digital IDs, CBDCs can be used to create a <a href="https://www.technologyreview.com/2022/11/22/1063605/china-announced-a-new-social-credit-law-what-does-it-mean/">China-style social credit scoring system</a>.

Under the slogan of “financial inclusion,” the IMF now <a href="https://twitter.com/digitaltimezone/status/1615924959338979330">pushes</a> CBDCs as a central piece of infrastructure. This United Nations’ specialized financial agency aims to make centralized digital currencies become instruments for the government and private sectors to implement targeted policies such as consumption coupons and welfare programs.
Major technology companies and financial institutions are also coming on board. At the WEF annual meeting, Bank of America <a href="https://finance.yahoo.com/news/bank-america-says-cbdcs-future-121752086.html">praised</a> CBDCs as the future of money. IBM <a href="https://www.coindesk.com/business/2023/01/17/cbdcs-are-the-future-of-money-ibm-exec-says/">embraced</a> them too. But as the <a href="https://twitter.com/eddieconroy10/status/1615527555964211201?s=43&amp;t=Ras2lSB_grCzslLJf98xSg">hand-picked global elites</a> in Davos, with a message of climate emergency, now try to bring the public into their universal digital payment network, we have an alternative.
<h2>Pleb-Powered Network</h2>
Created in the aftermath of the 2008 global financial crisis, bitcoin is the hardest form of money that we have ever seen. By eliminating a need to trust a central authority, this breakthrough of computer science enables censorship resistance. 
Bitcoin’s innovative economic incentives, aligning everyone’s self interests, has organically begun to re-engineer the economy. We are now seeing this unfold in the Southern United States. Texas <a href="https://bitcoinmagazine.com/business/texas-a-mecca-for-bitcoin-mining">has recently become</a> the Bitcoin capital of the world. The abundant energy and the low electricity rates (the majority coming from renewable sources), along with friendly regulations, are turning that state into a global mining hub. This has helped to accelerate energy innovation and generate a skilled workforce.
By celebrating the birth of this freedom money, Bitcoiners began to link one another. In the beautiful city of Austin, empowered by the protocol, orange-pilled locals have begun to actively collaborate in creating a strong foundation for the economy.

<h2>El Salvador’s Economic Liberty </h2>
In El Salvador, even before the country officially adopted Bitcoin, ordinary people have been working together to build on top of Bitcoin. In a small surf town with a population of 3,000, backed by a donation of bitcoin from an early adopter (who wishes to remain anonymous), the project <a href="https://www.bitcoinbeach.com/">Bitcoin Beach</a> was launched to create a resilient local economy.
Those grassroots efforts in El Zonte inspired El Salvador to become the first nation to legalize bitcoin as legal tender in September 2021. Nayib Bukele, the president of El Salvador, has now become one of the most notable Bitcoiners. At 41 years old, he understands the significance of this invention. 
Adam Back, a cryptographer who was cited in Satoshi Nakamoto’s Bitcoin white paper, <a href="https://twitter.com/adam3us/status/1492907242475118594?s=43&amp;t=1WzoosQ8RlOxbu7ZurVNUg">acknowledged</a> El Salvador’s Bitcoin adoption as a genuine “self-conceived state orange-pilling.”
Bukele, who has an <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Opinion_polling_on_the_Nayib_Bukele_presidency">approval rating of more than 80%</a>, aims to create financial inclusion by expanding the freedom that Bitcoin enables, seeing this as the birthright of each individual. With his policy of economic liberty, Bukele began to fight against the IMF’s financial dictatorship, thereby helping the country claim its independence and sovereignty.

El Salvador is already winning. It is on its way toward freedom. The president recently <a href="https://twitter.com/nayibbukele/status/1617700039534731264">announced</a> that the country made a full debt payment of $800 million despite mainstream media saying it would default because of its bitcoin investments.
<h2>The Bukele Effect </h2>
In the crisis of Western liberal democracy triggered by the corruption of governments, the world is now seeing great leadership arising from a tiny country of Central America, with a <a href="https://www.worldometers.info/world-population/el-salvador-population/">population of about 6.5 million</a>.

The volcano blonde, fairy godmother and keeper of the vision, Stacy Herbert, together with her partner Max Keiser, has been helping orange-pill the world. As a new resident of El Salvador, she now focuses on helping El Salvador’s efforts for Bitcoin adoption.
In an interview on “Bitfinex Talks,” Herbert <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vkq9biJPMdQ&amp;t=961s">described</a> Bukele as a father of hyperbitcoinization and talked about his art of statesmanship. Characterizing him as a second layer on top of Bitcoin, she explained how the president brought laws to protect the rights of his people.

Under President Bukele’s leadership, the rule of law has been restored in El Salvador. The country that <a href="https://www.statista.com/statistics/262963/ranking-the-20-countries-with-the-most-murders-per-100-000-inhabitants/#:~:text=El%20Salvador%20saw%20a%20murder,several%20Latin%20American%20cities%2C%20St.">had the world's highest homicide rates</a> <a href="https://elsalvadorinenglish.com/2022/10/19/latin-americans-believe-that-el-salvador-is-the-country-with-the-least-corruption-in-the-region/">is now quickly transforming itself</a> into becoming the place where everyone wants to be.
<h2>Human Good Will</h2>
The economic liberty secured by Bitcoin, then furthered by Bukele, has begun to enable widespread, human good will. As the path for economic prosperity has opened, capital has begun to flow into this previously-impoverished Central American nation. It is now fueling innovation and entrepreneurship.
Using Bitcoin as a powerful philanthropic tool, companies can engage in charitable assistance to provide services for those in need. Paxful, a leading, global, peer-to-peer platform, <a href="https://bitcoinmagazine.com/el-salvador-bitcoin-news/bitcoin-educational-center-launches-in-el-salvador">has created</a> an educational center in El Salvador providing resources and equitable opportunities to create real financial inclusion.

It <a href="https://blog.bitfinex.com/announcements/el-salvadors-historic-digital-asset-securities-law-passes/">has recently passed </a>digital securities law that serves as landmark legislation establishing a legal framework for all digital assets that are not bitcoin, as well as those issued on Bitcoin.
The relentless optimism that is growing in this Bitcoin country is now bringing people together from all around the world.
On January 30, 2023, Keiser and Herbet, the exuberant, OG Bitcoin couple, <a href="https://twitter.com/stacyherbert/status/1618045045428609025">hosted</a> an event in El Zonte to celebrate El Salvador’s victory. Tickets were sold out, with over 100 people on a waiting list. Bitcoiners from dozens of countries flew in to join the orange party.

These funds will support the world’s first Bitcoin diploma project. 
This kind of community collaboration brings people joy and love. Inspiring memes and the arts, it is enlivening culture, giving birth to a new global civil society. 
Bitcoin can fix our fragmented world. Backed by human creativity, it begins to transform an economy that is driven by greed and selfish ambition into one which carries an altruistic impulse that promotes human welfare.
Now, we, the Bitcoiners, the network of sovereign individuals, can show the rest of the world how we can exercise shared responsibility. With innovation, good will and ingenuity, we can meet challenges to create life, liberty and pursuit of happiness for all people.

The top 10 crypto assets recorded gains over the last 24 hours, except Binance’s BNB and Shiba Inu, which lost 0.15% and 0.77%, respectively. Solana and Cardano recorded the highest gain of 4.08% and 2.4%, respectively.

Few pieces of blockchain infrastructure have proven to be both more necessary and more fragile than cross-chain interoperability protocols, commonly known as <a href="https://blockworks.co/tag/bridges">bridges</a>. Whether you favor Ethereum layer-2 rollups, or an <a href="https://www.blockworksresearch.com/research/2022-in-review-network-coverage-layer-1s-and-2s">app-chain thesis</a> such as Cosmos or Avalanche <a href="https://www.blockworksresearch.com/research/avalanche-subnets">subnets</a>, a <a href="https://blockworks.co/tag/multichain">multichain</a> future requires data and value to flow between chains.



But so far no one has conclusively solved the engineering problems to make cross-chain communication safe, fast and cheap — to wit, estimates put the total value <a href="https://twitter.com/WuBlockchain/status/1578295159850405888">lost</a> to hacks and exploits at upwards of $2 billion since 2021.



The latest startup to try is Orb Labs, which announced a $4.5M seed round Tuesday, led by Bain Capital Crypto, with participation from Shima Capital, 6th Man Ventures, Aves Lair, Newman Capital, Modular Capital, and SevenX Ventures.



Co-founders Richard Adjei and Felix Madutsa told Blockworks, exclusively, that their goal is “to make it possible for the everyday people to find Web3 to be a comfortable place to be.”



“We think fundamentally, messaging protocols are the last piece of Web3 scaleability,” Adjei said. “Their primary use case is to help amortize block space demand.”



That entails moving some computation to chains which are cheaper to use, like layer-2s, while keeping assets safely secured on a trusted chain such as Ethereum. 



<h2>Efficiency versus security</h2>



To date, there have been three main types of cross-chain protocols:



<ol>
<li>Consensus light clients such as <a href="https://blockworks.co/tag/IBC">Cosmos’ IBC</a>, which are highly secure and trust-minimized;</li>



<li>Validator-based systems — the majority approach taken by Wormhole, LayerZero and Axelar — which have a set of validators verify messages off-chain; and</li>



<li>Optimistic messaging systems — the Nomad bridge being the most prominent — that rely on off-chain validity checks during a dispute window, much like <a href="https://www.blockworksresearch.com/glossary#optimistic-rollup-or">optimistic rollups</a>.</li>
</ol>
Each have their pros and cons, balancing the tradeoffs between speed, cost and security. <a href="https://blockworks.co/news/wormhole-parent-commits-320m-ether-to-replace-massive-defi-hack-losses">Wormhole</a> and <a href="https://blockworks.co/news/nomad-recovers-nearly-20m-of-stolen-190m">Nomad</a>, for instance, suffered exploits to the tune of hundreds of millions of dollars in 2022.



Orb Labs “went back to the drawing board” as Adjei and Madutsa put it, and came up with Earlybird, which uses “different libraries that get to the peak in terms of usability and security,” Adjei said.



Of course, they had to have catchy names.



Thunderbird, the most gas-efficient, uses a validator scheme much like existing popular protocols, but the team claims their solution delivers a greater than 20x cost savings.



The Rukh library is an optimistic messaging system which side-steps the problem that confronted Nomad.



Caladrius is the most trust-minimized — a consensus light client-based that Adjei said will be cheap enough to work on Ethereum. By his estimate, an implementation of IBC on Ethereum would cost on the order of $500 million per year.



Finally, Griffin, a library that combines the previous three, gives developers maximum flexibility, according to Orb Labs.



The basic idea is to allow applications to switch between the libraries based on the nature of their particular needs, dialing down security to reduce costs, or upping security with a more trust-minimized solution, when required.



This new approach is a major part of why venture investor Yida Gao, general partner at Shima Capital, sees room in the bridge market for a new player



“We think that there’s a second-mover advantage when it comes to building cross-chain communications protocols,” Gao told Blockworks.”



None of these solutions is yet in production, but the team plans to use the new seed funding to bring the vision to reality. That means hiring, scaling the tech, conducting security audits, and finding launch partners.



“We’ve talked to a few [layer-1s] that are exploring ways to build really robust native bridges, partly because the thing they all need to solve is there are not good solutions other than multisigs,” Adjei said.



<h2>“Future-proof interoperability”</h2>



Other messaging protocols are moving in a similar direction. The team’s vision is similar to what Axelar co-founder Sergey Gorbunov <a href="https://axelar.network/blog/future-proof-interop-path-adaptability-for-cross-chain-dapps">calls</a> “a concept of future-proof interoperability,” working towards a decoupling of the interoperability layers.



“Developers can build their dApps based on specific message semantics, while the underlying validation and transport layers can be adapted and improved over time,” Gorbunov said.



Gorbunov disputes the idea that validator-based systems are inherently less secure, noting that even the gold standard IBC encountered critical bugs last year. After “two bugs in the same week, the full Cosmos community was like on fire having to deal with those things — thankfully nobody lost money,” Gorbunov told Blockworks.



But he agreed that there’s still room for innovation in cross-chain architecture, writing on the Axelar blog that “Besides security and robustness challenges, the architecture of interchain dApps needs to be revisited from the ground up.”



Orb Labs’ first product, MagicLane, is a token wrapping feature to send tokens from one chain to another very easily, and is built on top of Earlybird.



“The whole idea behind messaging protocols is everything becomes a cross-chain message, because we’re sort of like moving computation, transactions and users to the most scalable chain at any given point in time,” Adjei said.



“That’s the only way we enter this world in Web3 where more every transaction is free.”

In a new YouTube video, Cowen tells his 784,000 subscribers that Bitcoin is experiencing a weekly death cross for the first time ever.

A death cross takes place when a short-term moving average crosses below a long-term moving average, reflecting price weakness.
The analyst notes that BTC’s 50-week simple moving average (SMA) is at $24,678 and its 200-week SMA is now at $24,999.
Says Cowen,
“Normally in bear markets, we’re not below the 200-week SMA, like hardly at all. And if [Bitcoin] is, it’s a relatively short period of time. It’s more or less just these wicks for the most part. Now, in this bear market, we’ve basically been below it since June, for the most part… 
Now [BTC] sort of come back up to [the 200-week SMA], but we have not definitively broken through the level that historically held as support.”

“You get that 77% pullback, followed by a 60% rally up to the 50-week SMA, and then followed by a slow bleed into the final low. But do note that even the Nadaq, when you did get that, it actually had sort of a local double top, where it came up to the 50-week, came back down, hovered for a… month, popped back up, and then came down. So that’s actually what the Nasdaq did way back when, so maybe be on the lookout for that.”
BTC is trading at $21,721 at time of writing.

Confusion Spirals in Crypto as the US Cracks Down

NFTs didn’t take over this year’s Super Bowl like <a href="https://nftnow.com/news/nfts-at-super-bowl-lvi/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">they did in 2022</a>. But perhaps this was to be expected, considering the NFT space only recently began to <a href="https://nftnow.com/features/nft-sales-are-up-43-but-are-we-really-in-for-a-bull-run/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">emerge from a market lull</a>. Despite a lack of blockchain-centric ads featured during the big game, NFTs still had a presence — and one that went far beyond Reddit’s highly successful <a href="https://nftnow.com/news/reddit-and-nfl-drop-super-bowl-lvii-collectible-avatars/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">collectible avatar collaboration</a> with the NFL.



We’re talking about <a href="https://twitter.com/DigiDaigaku" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">DigiDaigaku</a>, of course. An NFT-powered game created by Web3 startup <a href="https://twitter.com/LimitBreak" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Limit Break</a>, DigiDaigaku made waves as one of the only Web3-leaning commercials to air during the Super Bowl. Although the project garnered mass attention, it mustered a mixed bag of reactions, sending many in the NFT space reeling and ultimately resulting in controversy.



<h2>The DigiDaigaku NFT Super Bowl commercial</h2>



According to a press release shared with nft now, the DigiDaigaku commercial was meant to inspire “the largest minting event ever.” Those who viewed the ad would be prompted to scan a code allowing them to mint one of 10,000 free collectibles. But that’s not exactly what happened. 



In short, the commercial suffered from poor execution. While the <a href="https://youtu.be/ikvkQVE64a0" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">content itself</a> — which featured 3D animated protagonists going wild for a QR code for the better part of 30 seconds — may have left a bit to be desired, the prominent fixture within the ad (i.e., the QR code) was flawed. For many, the code didn’t direct them to mint an NFT but to the Twitter profile of Limit Break’s CEO and Co-Founder, <a href="https://twitter.com/gabrielleydon" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Gabriel Leydon</a>.

With a large banner that read “follow to win” set as Leydon’s Twitter header, many believed that the commercial and QR code were a form of high-level (and expensive) engagement farming. But apparently, that wasn’t the case. Instead, it was an unfortunate result of the DigiDaigaku website redirecting to Leydon’s Twitter account after the site failed to load. A significant hiccup for an ad <a href="https://venturebeat.com/games/gabe-leydons-limit-break-plans-6-5m-super-bowl-ad-for-nft-game/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">reportedly costing $6.5 million</a>. 



<h2>NFT Super Bowl commercial aftermath</h2>



Shortly after airing, it became apparent that the commercial was only a part of a quickly developing DigiDaigaku debacle. Apart from Leydon <a href="https://twitter.com/tropoFarmer/status/1624921217617600515?s=20&amp;t=Zqh2i2xJc92qA7-zuYwdNw" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">tweeting the ad</a> and mint link before the commercial actually aired, users noticed that the NFT claim itself was only accessible to those who had an Ethereum wallet — meaning that the majority of the millions of people watching the SuperBowl likely would not be able to claim.

As many took to Twitter to comment on the <a href="https://twitter.com/michaela_nft/status/1625156740936355840?s=20&amp;t=UIUlhdvH8EjEPIETJ5bCzw" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">missed opportunity</a> to potentially onboard enthusiasts into the NFT space, it became clear that DigiDaigaku was not the guiding light it could’ve been. While some collectors were able to claim the digital collectibles and made off with a successful quick flip of 0.5 ETH ($700 at the time) or more, floor prices began to drop and currently sit at 0.288 ETH. Before the game was over, Leydon announced a <a href="https://twitter.com/gabrielleydon/status/1624938161494433793" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">second-chance mint</a> featuring another 5,000 of the free <a href="https://opensea.io/collection/digidaigakudragoneggs" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">unrevealed NFT Dragon Eggs</a>, but only time will tell what’s next for the project. 



Regardless of the public sentiment, Leydon sees the commercial as a success. During a <a href="https://twitter.com/CultofDigi/status/1624979526835965952" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">DigiCult Twitter space</a> after the game, he responded to the detractors, saying, “I don’t know what they were expecting, but Digi did exactly what we said it was going to do.” Further, concerning accusations of engagement farming, Leydon noted he was simply doing what made financial sense. “What was I supposed to do?” he asked. “We spent seven million dollars, and after 4k minted, I’m supposed to say thanks for stopping by? No, I’m going to use that money for engagement.”



It remains to be seen how Limit Break and DigiDaigaku will move forward from the poorly-received launch. But perhaps, similar to other <a href="https://nftnow.com/features/cautionary-tales-from-hyped-nfts-pixelmon-hape-prime-and-more/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">hyped NFT drops</a> of the past, they will remain a reminder of the potentially toxic effects of falling short of expectations while operating under a microscope.

Here’s What Really Happened With DigiDaigaku’s Controversial Super Bowl Ad

The surge of inscriptions raises old debates about Bitcoin’s “true” purpose and its ability to become the money of the internet.

So, we’ve recently seen <a href="https://www.coindesk.com/tech/2023/02/02/giant-bitcoin-taproot-wizard-nft-minted-in-collaboration-with-luxor-mining-pool/">a Bitcoin transaction take up nearly an entire block</a> and <a href="https://twitter.com/murchandamus/status/1624072899354152962?t=TD71nETQ3BAVpKLBEDVO4g&amp;s=19">default mempools (300 MB) get filled up</a>. What’s going on with all this Ordinals and inscriptions madness? 
<h2>The Quick Explainer</h2>
Ordinals are a made up way of tracking sats (a fraction of a bitcoin) across transactions. Now, I stress it is a made up way of tracking sats, as it does not meaningfully impact bitcoin’s fungibility. As <a href="http://stephanlivera.com/456">explained by creator Casey Rodarmor on my podcast</a>, it’s a convention of numbering sats in the order they’re mined into existence, and tracking them across transactions in a first in, first out (FIFO) method. So, as Bitcoin transactions are made up of inputs and outputs, the first satoshi in the first input is considered to be transferred to the first output of a transaction. There are conventions around which Ordinals are uncommon, rare, epic, etc.

<h2>What’s An Inscription? </h2>
An inscription is another made-up convention where sats can be inscribed with arbitrary content, a kind of Bitcoin-native digital artifact or NFT. Using the convention, they can be sent around and stored in a Bitcoin unspent transaction output (UTXO). Now, because they are coded in such a way that they are written into transaction witnesses, they never enter the UTXO set. The UTXO set is seen as having heightened consideration for the network because every node (even pruned nodes) must maintain this UTXO set. So, I guess it could have been worse…
<h2>What’s The Bull Case For Ordinals And Inscriptions?</h2>
To steel man the case a little: The pro Ordinals and inscriptions case could broadly be understood as: <a href="https://docs.ordinals.com/faq.html">“Come for the fun, rich art, stay for the decentralized digital money.”</a> 
You could also agree with some of the <a href="https://bitcoinmagazine.com/culture/why-bitcoin-isnt-crypto">critiques of shitcoin NFTs</a>, and see this as a way of arguing that “Bitcoin does it better” e.g., Bitcoin inscriptions are immutable, always on chain, simpler and more secure than shitcoin NFTs. 
<h2>Concerns Raised With Inscriptions</h2>
The main concerns here are:
<ul>
<li>Reduced accessibility to transact on Bitcoin because of inscription/NFT degens creating a transaction backlog and paying a lower fee per real byte because of the witness discount</li>
<li>Reduced ability for users to run a full Bitcoin node because of the increased storage and bandwidth requirements</li>
<li>The possibility of illegal material being recorded into Bitcoin’s blockchain that might discourage some users from running a Bitcoin node</li>
</ul>
Of course, there are counter arguments also: 
<ul>
<li>Bitcoin was eventually going to develop a fee/blockspace market anyway and this may help with long-term viability of the network. Inscriptions may just form a “low value backlog” of transactions. </li>
<li>Bandwidth and storage costs have come down over the years since 2017. Though, arguably, bandwidth over Tor may still be problematic for those syncing a full node in a more private fashion. It could also be argued that it’s all still within conservative design limits that the network effectively accepted in 2017. </li>
<li>Illegal material on chain was always possible because you can’t fully stop steganography on bitcoin. <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Steganography">Steganography</a> is when you represent information within another message, in such a manner that the presence of the information is not evident to normal human inspection.</li>
</ul>
<h2>Revisiting Old Debates In Bitcoin: Purpose, Scaling And More</h2>
Some are arguing that, “We shouldn’t have raised the block size with SegWit and the witness discount in 2017” and, to some extent, this latest Ordinals and inscriptions trend is raising similar questions as those in the <a href="https://blog.bitmex.com/dapps-or-only-bitcoin-transactions-the-2014-debate/">OP_RETURN wars</a> of 2014. 
What is Bitcoin for? And should arbitrary data that doesn’t relate to financial transactions be encouraged or discouraged on Bitcoin’s blockchain? 
<h2>Taproot Is Not To Blame</h2>
Some commenters were initially blaming the Taproot soft fork for inscriptions. But Taproot seems to only save about 4% on the cost of inscriptions.

It’s also worthwhile to note that this kind of thing was possible with SegWit, and beforehand with OP_RETURN and even before that, with fake signatures, as explained by Adam Back here:

<h2>Cultural Issues</h2>
Some ETH huffers and cRyPtO people are enjoying this moment because, in their eyes, they can “stick it to the maxis” and those of a more “Bitcoin fundamentalist” persuasion, i.e., the people who believe bitcoin should be a money. 
I’m closer to the “fundamentalist” camp myself, seeing my mission as being about advancing bitcoin as money. And surely, after all the effort of Bitcoin developers to optimize and use blockspace more efficiently, the inscriptions on chain seem wasteful and unnecessarily decreasing Bitcoin’s accessibility for use in financial transactions. 
Some argue that taking actions against Bitcoin inscriptions is “censorship” and that it’s wrong to view these transactions as “spam,” given that they pay a bitcoin transaction fee. But in the end, it comes to the purpose of the project. While yes, it’s true that Bitcoin is designed to be censorship resistant and that NFTs arguably “started on Bitcoin” in years gone by, Bitcoin is arguably meant to be more about decentralized and peer-to-peer electronic cash. 
<h2>Can This Trend Realistically Be Stopped? </h2>
Short of drastic action, probably not. At least, that’s what <a href="https://lists.linuxfoundation.org/pipermail/bitcoin-dev/2023-January/021372.html">Andrew Poelstra spelled out in a recent post on the bitcoin-dev mailing list</a>:

There are arguably bigger fish to fry, like helping improve Bitcoin adoption as money and helping encourage further decentralization in the custody of bitcoin, the mining of bitcoin, the scalability and verifiability of Bitcoin, etc. 
<h2>Ossification? Not Yet</h2>
Some even go so far as to argue that, “Oh, this is a mistake and we must ossify the Bitcoin protocol now to stop any further mistakes.” I think this would also be an error. There are various soft fork ideas that are opt in, do not harm non users and could help scale bitcoin self custody. For example, <a href="http://stephanlivera.com/200">ANYPREVOUT</a> or <a href="http://stephanlivera.com/449">OP_VAULT</a>. 
ANYPREVOUT in particular is interesting to me because someday, with global adoption, we may have <a href="https://stephanlivera.com/episode/442/">approximately 80,000 times the transactional demand</a> that we have now. In that world, ANYPREVOUT enables an upgrade to “Eltoo” Lightning, giving us a way to share the cost of on-chain transactions in a self-custodial way. If we want Bitcoin to be used in a way that’s more self sovereign, we ideally want people to be able to afford to take self custody on chain. Without this, they may be confined into custodial platforms because the cost of self custody is too prohibitive. <a href="https://bitcoinops.org/en/topics/eltoo/">Eltoo</a> also has various benefits for Lightning, such as making backups easier.
 Yes, we should be conservative, but we should also consider technologies that help bitcoin be the best that it can be at being digital hard money.
<h2>Bottom Line</h2>
While I’m “against” inscriptions in a sense and would rather they be socially discouraged, I also don’t think it’s worth getting too worried about them for now. For all we know, they could be a short-lived fad. 
But even if they are not a short-lived fad, what’s the most likely outcome here? Low-value inscriptions will likely be priced out by financial transactions over time as Bitcoin gets adopted by more people. It’s just that adoption happens in a “lumpy” way and it’s concentrated into periods of high use (as seen in 2013, 2017 and 2021), and then periods of relative doldrums as transaction volume subsides, and new technology and scaling techniques are applied.

Over the medium to long terms, financial transactions will come to dominate in Bitcoin. Other uses of Bitcoin will be subordinate to its use as decentralized money for the internet.

Two months later, Boswell was one of three artists selected for Tezos’ live-minting activation at the Art Basel Miami Beach fair. It’s the gift that keeps on giving.

10 fxhash Generative Art Projects You Need to Know

As a permissionless store of value, bitcoin allowed me to escape the dangers of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. And it can help you, too.
For me, being a Bitcoiner means believing in the free market and voluntary exchange. Bitcoin allows all exchange participants to benefit. But while we still live in a fiat- and State-dominated world, we sometimes face unprecedented threats and challenges. 
This is my story.
I lived in the Ukrainian city of Kramatorsk (the administrative center in the eastern part of the country) until the <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2022_Russian_invasion_of_Ukraine">Russian invasion of Ukraine</a> began. As a Bitcoiner and remote worker, I decided to relocate to the western part of the country. Fortunately, Bitcoin provides the personal freedom needed to do something like this. While Gigi correctly states that “<a href="https://dergigi.com/2021/01/14/bitcoin-is-time/">Bitcoin is time</a>,” Bitcoin is also space and freedom of movement.
Last year, I joined the Bitcoin Magazine Ukraine team. However, my work was interrupted by a brutal attack from the Russian military on February 1, when it struck my apartment building. In the attack, the Russians used a mobile, ballistic missile system known as the <a href="http://www.military-today.com/missiles/iskander_k.htm">Iskander-K</a>.<a href="https://www.aa.com.tr/en/russia-ukraine-war/iskander-missiles-used-against-ukrainian-military-infrastructure-says-russia/2761646"> According to Russia’s defense ministry</a>, its forces use the Iskander to target “military infrastructure,” but the reality of this attack was as follows.

The outcome of using the hypersonic ballistic missile against the apartment building was predictable: complete destruction.

A higher death toll was prevented by the evacuation of most residents and the professionalism of rescuers who saved many people, including a two-year-old girl.

<h2>Bitcoin Vs. Real Estate As A Store Of Value</h2>
This case clearly shows that bitcoin serves much more effectively as a store of value than real estate. 
First, bitcoin cannot be destroyed, even by the most severe missile attack. As long as you properly store your seed phrase, you can always restore access to your coins. Physical property is much more vulnerable and its physical destruction means that you do not have access to it anymore. 
Second, Bitcoin is a global monetary system and it does not significantly depend on local conditions in different countries or regions of the world. In contrast, real estate makes its owner dependent upon the conditions of their country. In the case of war, for instance, both the liquidity and monetary value of real estate can fall dramatically. 
Third, bitcoin’s supply is predetermined, and it changes according to an algorithm that cannot be altered by anyone. However, the supply of real estate is subject to change, making it problematic as a means for engaging in long-term financial planning.
I lost my apartment and almost all of my material possessions. Nevertheless, I still have access to my BTC.
<h2>The Real Implications Of Bitcoin</h2>
I believe that this story teaches us several important lessons:
<ol>
<li>We need hyperbitcoinization now more than ever. As long as governments can print money to finance aggressive military campaigns against other countries, a large percentage of the global population will live under the continuous threat of their lives and health being ruined. Some authoritarian and totalitarian regimes even violate the most basic international agreements and deliberately target civilian populations. This would be impossible under the Bitcoin standard in which all campaigns would be financed with real savings. Moreover, the overall culture of Bitcoiners that respects private property rights would eliminate such cases of large-scale aggression.</li>
<li>We need to transition to become a low-time-preference society. The fiat world system tries to maintain the atmosphere of fear and uncertainty that results in high-time preferences. And a war is the most radical way of enforcing high-time preferences on the population. In contrast, the monetary stability and decentralization of power is crucial for promoting peace and prosperity through low-time preferences. Only under such conditions can <a href="https://www.amazon.com/Sovereign-Individual-Mastering-Transition-Information/dp/0684832720">sovereign individuals</a> emerge.</li>
<li>Not all technologies are created equal. Although we as Bitcoiners like innovations, we should recognize that technologies can be used in different ways. Governments often apply technological achievements to create weapons of mass destruction and other instruments to violate people’s fundamental rights and liberties. The underlying differences in technologies and their social and ethical implications should be communicated to the general public.</li>
</ol>
<h2>One More Thing</h2>
We now know for sure that bitcoin can survive, even under missile attacks. Similarly, Bitcoin can survive under <a href="https://bitcoinmagazine.com/business/the-first-major-bitcoin-civil-war">big blockers’ attacks</a>, <a href="https://bitcoinmagazine.com/markets/china-ban-bitcoin-is-a-good-thing">China’s mining ban</a>, <a href="https://bitcoinmagazine.com/culture/greenpeace-environment-attacks-help-bitcoin">environmental anti-mining campaigns</a>, <a href="https://bitcoinmagazine.com/culture/cash-limits-cbdc-and-bitcoin-in-nigeria">central bank digital currency promotion</a> and any future attempts to undermine peoples’ liberty through coercion. 
For many centuries, philosophers elaborated on the causes of injustice and the optimal ways to resist them. Due to the lack of practical tools, their attempts to establish a free and peaceful society have failed.
